Dental Cleanings and Exams at Peak Dental Arts

When you come in for a dental cleaning and exam, your visit is never rushed. Many families in Uniontown and nearby Green, Ohio have trusted us for generations, and we love being the dental home they can count on.

What Happens During a Dental Cleaning and Exam

Your appointment includes a professional cleaning plus a detailed evaluation of your teeth, gums, and bite. Your hygienist will remove plaque and tartar, polish your teeth, and share practical tips based on what they see, not generic advice.

Our dentist, Dr. Lanik, then completes a comprehensive exam to spot concerns early and help protect your oral health. Depending on your needs, your visit may include:

  • Review of your health history, medications, allergies, and any new conditions
  • Digital X-rays, when needed
  • Gum and periodontal screening
  • Intraoral photos to document changes over time
  • Oral cancer screening and head and neck exam
  • Bite and TMJ evaluation
  • A complete review of findings and next steps

Why Routine Dental Cleanings Matter

Even if you brush and floss daily, plaque can still build up in hard-to-reach areas. Regular dental cleanings help reduce your risk of cavities, gum disease, and bigger problems that can be harder and more costly to treat later. A routine exam also gives us a chance to catch early signs of wear, cracking, inflammation, or decay before they turn into pain or an urgent visit.

New to the Dentist or Behind on Visits? You Are Welcome Here

If it has been years since your last cleaning, you are not alone. Our approach is simple: we meet you where you are, explain what we see, and help you take the next best step without pressure. You will always know what is happening, why it matters, and what options fit your goals.

Preventative Care Options That May Be Recommended

A dental cleaning and exam is your baseline for prevention, but sometimes we see areas that need extra support to keep small issues from turning into bigger ones. During your visit, we look at your cavity risk, enamel strength, gum health, and how well certain spots stay clean day to day. If we notice deep grooves on molars, early signs of enamel weakening, or a history of frequent cavities, we may recommend added preventive care to protect your smile between visits.

These options are quick, conservative, and designed to help you avoid fillings and repair work later. Two of the most common add-ons we recommend are dental sealants and fluoride treatments. You can learn more about each below, and we can also talk through which option fits your needs based on what we see in your exam.

If you have kids, preventive care matters even more as permanent teeth come in and brushing habits are still developing. If you are an adult, these same options can still make a real difference, especially if you have dry mouth, gum recession, past dental work, or higher cavity risk.

Common reasons we may recommend preventive treatments include:

  • Deep grooves on back teeth that trap plaque
  • Early signs of enamel wear or sensitivity
  • A history of cavities or frequent “watch areas”
  • Orthodontic appliances or retainers that make cleaning harder
  • Gum recession that exposes more vulnerable tooth surfaces

Dental Sealants

Depending on your age and dental health, we may recommend dental sealants to help protect the chewing surfaces of back teeth, where grooves can trap bacteria. Sealants create a thin barrier over the enamel, which can lower the risk of cavities in areas that are harder to keep clean with brushing alone.

Fluoride Treatments

Fluoride helps strengthen enamel and can be especially helpful when we see early signs of weakening or thinning enamel. If certain areas look more prone to decay, a fluoride treatment can add extra protection and support long-term tooth health between visits.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Cleanings and Exams

At Peak Dental Arts, we recommend patients get their teeth cleaned twice a year. If you are diagnosed with periodontal disease, we may recommend a deeper cleaning, also called periodontal therapy or scaling and root planing. We typically recommend these deeper cleanings three to four times per year.

Not necessarily. Generally, patients only require X-rays of their teeth once every 12 months. However, if we find areas of concern during a procedure, we may need to take additional X-rays for diagnosis purposes.

Deep cleanings, also called periodontal therapy, are for patients who have been diagnosed with periodontal disease. We may recommend periodontal therapy three to four times per year. A regular teeth cleaning is still a very comprehensive procedure, but we recommend only two cleanings per year.

Nope! Our oral hygienists take every step necessary to ensure you are comfortable throughout the process. They’re gentle and use tools to remove plaque and bacteria without overly irritating your gums/teeth.

That said, failing to brush your teeth or floss regularly could result in some sensitivity when you arrive for your dental exam or cleaning appointment.
